A Tsunami Update: Japanese Death Toll, President Obama’s Statement, and Hawaii on Alert

A Tsunami Update: Japanese Death Toll, President Obama’s Statement, and Hawaii on Alertlatest news update,A Tsunami Update: Japanese Death Toll, President Obama’s Statement, and Hawaii on Alert; The tsunami that devastated northern and eastern Japan earlier today has just hit Hawaii. Officials are taking emergency precautions across the archipelago, as waves may climb as high as eight feet in certain areas, CNN reports. Warnings have also been issued across the western United States.
Meanwhile, horrifying videos and news reports continue to steam out of Japan. “It’s bigger than any known historic earthquake in Japan, and bigger than expectations for that,” Susan Hough, a seismologist with the United States Geological Survey told the Los Angeles Times, estimating that the quake was one of the 10 most powerful on record.A Tsunami Update: Japanese Death Toll, President Obama’s Statement, and Hawaii on Alert
The water has crippled the country’s infrastructure, including, most pressingly, its nuclear power plants. “The International Atomic Energy Agency said Japan had closed four nuclear power plants as a precaution,” the Associated Press reports. “A state of emergency was declared at one of the plants after its cooling system had a mechanical failure. Trouble was reported at two other nuclear plants as well, but there was no radiation leak at any.” Buildings, roads, and ports have been destroyed, and the relief and rescue efforts could cost billions. “This is certainly the worst thing that can happen in Japan at the worst time,” said economist Nouriel Roubini of the tsunami’s economic effect. The country is already severely in debt.
