Last night pop singer Christina Aguilera performed the “Star-Spangled Banner” with passion, with soul–and got roasted on radio, TV and the web for fumbling a few lines.
“She blew it,” said sports talk show host Mike Golic on his show “Mike and Mike in the Morning.”
But in many ways, Aguilera’s rendition may have been in keeping with the history and tradition of the song.
“The Star-Spangled Banner” is one of the most famous songs in the world. In part, because it is so familiar, singers often flub the lyrics or miss high notes because they assume, since they think they know the song so well, performing it will come easily. Why Christina Aguilera’s National Anthem Struck a Nerve
It usually doesn’t.Whitney Houston’s rendition of the National Anthem before 1991’s Super Bowl XXV between the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills is one that many listeners cite as a favorite–it’s the All-American version, powered with high notes and big vocals.
But Marvin Gaye’s performance, before the 1983 NBA All-Star Game, may rank as one of the finest. He turns “The Star-Spangled Banner” into a prayer, a call for unity and a funky make-out jam — all without violating the dignity of the song. (Or removing his sunglasses indoors.)
Aguilera has performed the song a number of times herself, including a stripped-down rendition of it accompanied only by a drummer. Why Christina Aguilera’s National Anthem Struck a Nerve
