The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera

The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera
The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera latest news update,The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera; At the Metropolitan Opera's 'Le Comte Ory' premiere, left to right, Hugh Dancy, Claire Danes, Julianna Margulies and Keith Lieberthal. Is it any coincidence that the new Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon" opened on the same night as the gala premiere of Rossini's "Le Comte Ory" at the Metropolitan Opera? Yes, probably. But there were certainly some overlaps. Both are pretty darn funny, in sophisticated and surprising ways. The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera "Le Comte Ory," for instance, directed by Bartlett Sher, involves a ribald (and supposedly accidental) ménage a trois. It also has a major plot point that includes a group of men cross-dressing as nuns. Even "Book of Mormon," for all its dirty language, doesn't go that far, but, of course, it comments on sexuality and religion.Furthermore, both evenings brought out a star-studded crowd. For "Book of Mormon," that meant Jennifer Jason Leigh, Kristen Wiig and Paul Rudd. For "Le Comte Ory," that meant Rebecca Hall, Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy and Julianna Margulies. The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera
Let's face it, and there's no contest here: The opera's attendees were far better dressed. This was a black-tie affair underwritten by Yves Saint Laurent. At least Ms. Hall and Emmy Rossum eschewed the traditional black for deep, rich jewel tones. It was tangerine for Ms. Hall; emerald green for Ms. Rossum, who compared her look to 1970s Lauren Hutton, at least on Twitter. The Curtain Raiser to a Night at the Opera
